ASTM D 86
Standard test method for distillation of petroleum products and liquid fuels at atmospheric pressure
The scope of the method is that a 100 ml sample is dispersed under conditions that correspond to its origin. Systematic observations of thermometer readings and condensate volumes are made and the test results are calculated based on these data.
The test method covers the distillation of petroleum products and liquid fuels at atmospheric pressure using a laboratory batch distillation apparatus to quantify the boiling range. The method is used for products such as:
- medium and light fractions;
- automotive fuels for engines;
- aviation gasolines;
- fuel for turbojet engines;
- diesel fuels;
- biodiesel mixtures up to 20%;
- fuel for marine vessels;
- special petroleum white spirits;
- naphtha;
- white spirits;
- kerosene and fuel oil of grades 1 and 2.
This method covers manual and automatic measuring instruments.
Test Method D86 is applied to fuel ethanol blends such as Ed75 and Ed85 (Specification D5798) or other fuel ethanol blends with an ethanol content greater than 10% by volume.
The method is not applicable to products containing significant amounts of residual material.
